Cultural Performance: Gugak-Isang

Gugak-Isang is a dynamic performance group composed of young traditional Korean musicians who bring vibrant music and performance art to life amidst the fast pace of modern city life. Founded in 2014, the group reinterprets and re-creates Korea’s traditional performing arts—such as pungmul (folk percussion), shamanic rituals, and mask dances—through a contemporary lens.

In 2021, Gugak-Isang gained public recognition by reaching the Top 5 on JTBC’s “Poongryu: Battle Between the Vocalists,” where they showcased the beauty and charm of Korean traditional music to a wide audience. With their unique style, they deliver comfort and inspiration to people worn out by daily life, while continuously striving to contribute to the growth and evolution of gugak.
