Over the last few decades, youth-led movements have been instrumental in challenging authoritarian regimes across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The Arab Spring, beginning in 2010, exemplified this trend of leveraging social media to organize protests and demand political change in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Syria.
Since then, this wave of youth-led resistance has reached countries including Sudan, Sri Lanka, Senegal, and most recently, Bangladesh, with the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s fifteen-year authoritarian regime. Characterized by digital mobilization and a clear commitment to democratic values, these movements have marked a significant shift in the global, regional, and local political landscape.
Similar to other transitional democracies, Bangladesh is now undergoing a process of state reforms under the interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. In this context, the Shadow Reform Commission (SRS), as part of academia and civil society, endeavors to bring forward alternative reform proposals reflecting mass aspirations. In partnership with the Political and Policy Science Research Foundation (PSRF), the SRS is organizing a Political Science Conference where scholars and practitioners from various disciplines will explore global democratic transitions and present reform strategies in Bangladesh’s evolving context.
